Tummy Time 101: Best Playmats for Infant Development
Tummy time is one of the most important things you can do for your newborn — yet it's one of the most Googled parenting questions in the UAE. If your baby cries through every session, or you're not sure when to start, you're not alone. Here's everything you need to know, plus our picks for the best playmats to make it easier.
What is tummy time and why does it matter?
Tummy time simply means placing your baby on their stomach while they're awake and supervised. It's essential for building the neck, shoulder and core muscles your baby needs to roll, sit, crawl and eventually walk. It also helps prevent flat head syndrome (positional plagiocephaly) — a common concern for babies who spend most of their time on their backs.
When should you start tummy time?
You can start from day one — even in the hospital. Begin with short sessions of 2–3 minutes, 2–3 times per day. As your baby gets stronger, gradually build up to 20–30 minutes of total tummy time daily by 3–4 months. By 6 months, many babies will happily roll themselves into and out of the position on their own.
Signs your baby is building strength:
- Briefly lifting their head (0–1 month)
- Holding their head at 45° (2 months)
- Pushing up on forearms (3–4 months)
- Full mini push-up on straight arms (5–6 months)
Why do some babies hate tummy time?
Newborns often cry during tummy time because it's genuinely hard work — those muscles are brand new. The trick is to make the experience engaging rather than something to endure. Get down to their level, use a mirror, a rattle, or a colourful tummy time mat with visual stimulation. Short, frequent sessions always beat long, tearful ones.
What to look for in a tummy time mat
The right infant playmat makes a real difference. Here's what matters:
Cushioning — A thin blanket on a hard floor is uncomfortable for little elbows and chins. Look for a mat with enough padding to support without being so soft it poses any risk.
Visual stimulation — High-contrast patterns, bright colours and attached toys give babies something to focus on, which encourages them to lift and hold their head for longer. Mirrors are particularly effective.
Size — Big enough that baby can kick and roll without going off the edge. At least 80 × 100 cm is a good benchmark.
Easy to clean — Spit-up happens. A machine-washable baby development mat is non-negotiable, especially in the UAE where you'll use it year-round.
Non-toxic materials — Babies will mouth everything they can reach. Look for OEKO-TEX certified fabrics and non-toxic dyes.

How to make tummy time a daily habit
The easiest way to build consistency is to attach tummy time to an existing routine. Try placing baby on their newborn play mat immediately after a nappy change, or use it as the wind-down before a nap. Keep the mat in your main living area so it's always visible and ready — out of sight really does mean out of mind.
If your baby is still really struggling past 3 months or showing no progress in head control, mention it to your paediatrician. For most babies though, consistency is everything — a few minutes several times a day adds up faster than you'd expect.
